Exploring the world

The Grand Canyon Fall 2010

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in the United States in the state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the first national parks in the United States. We stayed here with my husband’s father’s family for three nights and enjoyed the view of the canyon, the taste of the different foods and dishes, and of course the company of each other. Luckily we did not get snow, we came the week before the cold weather hit, and was lucky enough to spend our days walking around in t-short and thin pants or shorts. The high altitude made us tired and very very thirsty. I still haven’t figured out why we were always so thirsty, but perhaps that has to do with the high altitude and perhaps drier air? We also visited some of the more popular places around the South Rim of the canyon like: the El Tovar Hotel which was built in 1905 and is the most luxurious lodging on the South Rim; Desert View Watchtower which was built in 1932 and is situated at the far eastern end of the South Rim and it offers one of the few views of the bottom of the Canyon and the Colorado River; and every other building around the South Rim including watching the donkeys walk away with tourists down into the canyon for an over-night experience. Now, that would have been cool to do, but we had a 71-year old with us which did not give us time for any extravagant adventures. The drive home went faster than we expected, and since my hubby and I drove there by ourselves we figured we could take old Route 66 back home. It was really neat to see all the old hotels and diners along the way. We even had the chance to see the mountains where the old higher level of the ocean reached to during the last hot tropical age in history. We were driving on the bottom of that rim, on route 66, and thing that the ocean had reached so much higher was just astonishing. They have even found seashells at the TOP of these plateaus. It took us only 6 hours to drive all the way back home to our drive way, and we were happy to pick up our little baby at the pet-boarding place the following morning. Next time we go back, we have decided to actually go hiking and bring lots and lots of water and sodas to be able to handle the possible heat and high altitude.

The above photo is so beautiful that I printed it out into a larger format and framed it for my hubby’s birthday. Thank you Erica for taking the picture!
